Bifidobacterium and enteral feeding in preterm infants: Cluster-randomized trial
BACKGROUND This study evaluated the benefit of Bifidobacterium bifidum OLB6378 (B. bifidum) in very low-birthweight (VLBW) infants (birthweight <1500 g) for the acceleration of enteral feeding. METHODS A cluster-randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in 19 hospitals, divided into two groups: the B group (n = 10 hospitals; B. bifidum given to infants within 48 h of bi...
متن کاملHearing loss in very low birthweight infants treated with neonatal intensive care SOLOMON
The hearing of 111 perinatal intensive care survivors of birthweights 1500 g or less was assessed at a mean age of 64 years (range 4-12). These 111 infants included 86% of the longterm survivors of this birthweight cared for in the newborn unit of University College Hospital, London, during the years 1966-72. All these infants were nursed in commercially available incubators for periods ranging...
متن کاملCosts and outcomes in a regional neonatal intensive care unit.
At the Birmingham Maternity Hospital the mean cost of caring for surviving infants who require neonatal intensive care ranges from approximately pounds 2500 (for infants above 1500 g birthweight), to pounds 5500 (for infants 1000 to 1499 g birthweight), to pounds 10 000 (for infants less than 1000 g birthweight). The mean cost of caring for non-survivors is pounds 1000 or less, with little diff...

متن کاملRetrolental fibroplasia--controlled study of 4 years' experience in a neonatal intensive care unit.
During the 4 years 1977-80, 14 infants developed retrolental fibroplasia (RLF) in the neonatal unit at this medical centre. All were very low birthweight (VLBW) infants who weighed 1500 g or less at birth. The incidence of RLF was 3.5% for all VLBW infants admitted for neonatal intensive care and 4.7% for VLBW survivors. The mean birthweight of the affected infants was 970 (range 730-1310) g an...
